* launch event / hype train to make the game feel special as a moment in time.Kerbal Space Program ( KSP) is a space flight simulation video game developed by Mexican studio Squad for Linux, OS X, Windows, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S and Xbox One. * show a gameplay loop / vertical slice of the game (streamers / betas) * expand upon the features of the game as the dev gets them into a presentable state (gameplay trailers) * reveal the game by pitching the concept / player fantasy (cinematic trailers) Typically a game marketing campaign works like this: Any marketer will tell you that lying to the customer is the worst possible thing you can do because it destroys brand reputation and people very quickly find out and tell others. If they’re not then with all the choice players have why would anyone pay attention. Marketing’s job is to be the biggest advocate for the game. In my entire career I’ve never seen a dev add something they didn’t want to, except for legal “the game will not release in this market without these things” reasons. Sometimes publishers will offer advice/data about the market that can influence developers to add certain things to their game. Generally though publishers believe in their developer partners and if the devs succeed so does the publisher. Typically the publisher is the one pushing the developers to finish the game before the project runs out of money/budget. If it’s exciting enough and they want the money, it will get picked up by a publisher. In gaming the Developer generally sets the scope/vision of the game. What you describe sounds more like Business Development/ Sales over promising on a B2B contract. In those situations the employees can't really do shit about it because well, they can't afford to fight the studio and if they could it would mean burning their career to the ground.Īs someone who leads a marketing function in the gaming industry with many years of experience this is way off the mark. It's basically the same shit that happens when studio heads abuse/harass employees, but on a larger scale. They need publishers to make it in the industry, and while others might not be as shitty as Take2, they're all a little shitty and none of them look kindly on someone taking one of them to court.

Publishers can screw studios with confidence knowing that upon being screwed the studio be so close to shutting their doors they simply can't afford a long protracted legal battle.Įven if they could afford to fight them, it doesn't really accomplish anything. A lot of them work project-to-project, factoring bonuses in to their future plans. Studios like that can't afford to fight them, hell independent studios can rarely afford to even take a hit. The shitty part is there is basically no consequences for publishers. /r/GamePhysics - Clips of game physics shining and glitchingĭesign based on /r/FlatBlue created by /u/creesch./r/gaming4gamers - middle ground between purely-for-fun and more serious subreddits./r/GamingLeaksAndRumours - Leaks and Rumors.Posting unmarked spoilers will result in removal and warning, and posting spoilers with malicious intent will result in a ban.
